We chose to begin our 3-part series with an old friend, namely Electronic Data Interchange.
EDI is an old friend because it has existed since the early 1970s, while Microsoft Dataverse and Microsoft Power Apps are the newer guys on the block.
Narrowly defined, EDI initially referred to the concept of businesses electronically communicating information to each other that was traditionally communicated on paper.

Then in 1996, the National Institute of Standards and Technology updated the definition of EDI as "the computer-to-computer interchange of strictly formatted messages that represent documents other than monetary instruments."
The implication is that EDI represents a sequence of messages that flow between two parties, either of whom may serve as originator or recipient, without human intervention.
